What is a calorie surplus?
The short version
Eating more energy than you use. A modest surplus supports building muscle, especially with good training.
More food doesn't mean more muscle beyond a point — just more fat.
The full version
What it is
A surplus means your energy intake is higher than what you use over time. Some of that extra energy can go towards building new tissue — including muscle, when you're training for it.
Modest is enough
A modest surplus can support muscle gain when paired with appropriate resistance training. Beginners can often build muscle with only a small surplus, or sometimes without much of one.
More food ≠ more muscle
Muscle builds at a limited rate. Eating dramatically more doesn't speed that up much — beyond a point, the extra mostly gets stored as fat.
What actually matters
Eat a bit more than maintenance, keep protein up, train consistently, and if your weight hasn't moved over a few weeks, add a little more food.
“Your body can't turn unlimited pizza into unlimited muscle.”
