Does meal timing matter?
The short version
Total daily intake is usually more important than exact timing.
Timing can still matter for comfort, performance, hunger and preference.
The full version
Totals first
For most people, how much you eat across the day — total energy and total protein — matters more than exactly when you eat it.
When timing does matter
Timing can still be useful. Some people feel better training after a light meal; others can't eat close to a session. Spreading protein across a few meals is practical. Athletes with multiple sessions or games benefit from planning fuel and recovery around them. Hunger and personal preference count too.
No panic window
You don't need to drink a protein shake within 30 minutes or the workout was wasted. A normal meal with some protein in the hours around training is plenty.
What actually matters
Eat at times that suit your life and training. If you play sport or train hard, think about fuel before and a proper meal after — sensibly, not urgently.
