Focus is a skill
The short version
Focus improves with practice, like anything else. Removing distractions helps more than willpower.
The full version
Focus can be practised
Focus isn't a fixed trait you either have or don't. Like any skill, it improves with practice.
The task in front of you
Performance often benefits from bringing attention back to the immediate task. In the gym: the next set. In golf: the next shot. In AFL: the next contest. In gaming: the next round or decision.
Distraction is part of it
You won't eliminate every distraction, and you don't need to. The skill is noticing you've drifted and bringing your attention back. Every time you do that, that's a rep. Removing easy distractions — phone away, notifications off — makes it easier.
What actually matters
Practise single-task focus in short blocks, use a simple cue to reset, and judge yourself on how quickly you come back — not on never drifting.
Key takeaways
- 01Focus is trainable
- 02Next set, next shot, next contest
- 03Drifting and returning is the rep
- 04Remove easy distractions first
